Although Certificates of Deposits are FDIC-insured, when they are purchased and sold in the secondary market, commonly referred to as “brokered CDs”, they will fluctuate in value and if sold prior to maturity are subject to risks including the possible loss of principal amount invested.

Defined Portfolios (UITs)

A Defined Portfolio, also called a Unit Investment Trust, is a portfolio of securities that remains fixed (except under certain circumstances) for the life of a trust. Benefits include:

  • Portfolio diversification—Helps minimize credit risks of individual securities within the portfolio
  • Liquidity—Generally you can sell a UIT every business day at its liquidation price in the secondary market.
  • Low minimum investment
  • Scheduled rate of return—Fixed income UITs pay a consistent distribution amount each payment period until the bonds in the trust are retired
  • Scheduled maturity—With fixed income UIT portfolios, investors can easily review the specifics on each security and determine when to expect returns.

Unit Investment Trusts are subject to risks including market risk and interest rate risk. UITs are sold by prospectus. Before investing, you should carefully consider the investment objectives, risks, charges and expenses of the investment company. You may obtain a prospectus by calling the investment company or from your financial advisor. UITs are subject to possible loss of principal invested.

Fixed Income Investments (Bonds)

Fixed income investing offers several key benefits:

  • Diversification—May reduce volatility in your portfolio and assist in diversification
  • Income—Fixed income dividends help supplement other income sources
  • Potential tax advantages—Some fixed income investments are exempt from federal and/or state income taxes

Income may be subject to the federal alternative minimum tax (AMT) for certain investors.  Fixed income investments are subject to risks including: market, credit and interest rate risk.
