Without diverse talent, organizations often lack the insight or ideation to develop specific programs and offerings to best serve a wide client base.

“In the workplace we foster an inclusive environment in which different backgrounds, perspectives and experiences are valued and respected,” says Old National Chief Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Officer Corliss Garner. “In the workforce we strive to build a diverse talent acquisition funnel and provide high impact team member engagement and development programs.”

One example of this engagement is Old National’s Impact Networks (Abilities First, African American, Impact Network, Military Veterans Impact Network, PRIDE, TODOS, Women LEAD, ONB Young Professionals). These volunteer-based team member groups are open to all team members with a passion for driving engagement, creating awareness of diverse backgrounds and experiences, and building a culture of inclusion.

Serving communities and working to close the wealth gap

At Old National Bank, a diverse workforce allows us to have a greater impact on our client base throughout the ever-increasing diversity of the Midwest. This while contributing to the sustainability of the communities we serve through grants, lending and investments, and building strong community partnerships.

Old National this year launched its $500,000 Choose Your Charity campaign, which gives participating communities the opportunity to award local nonprofits with as much as $15,000. Voters in Illinois, Iowa, Northwest Indiana and Southeast Wisconsin have the opportunity to choose a 501(c)3 organization to share in funds provided by ONB.

Entering 2022, Old National began implementation of its five-year Community Growth Plan, which includes $3.2 billion for:

  • Community development lending and investments, including increased lending to low-to-moderate individual and minority income borrowers.
  • Increased small business lending, adding to an already strong track record of support for small business development within low-to-moderate income communities.
  • Philanthropic activities, providing $23.7 million in funds, representing an approximate 5% increase to our baseline philanthropic giving over the five-year period.

“There's a pretty significant wealth gap with underserved communities, minority individuals, whether it's homeownership, whether it's credit scores, whether it's just income, net worth, etc.,” said Old National Chief Impact Officer Rafael Sanchez. “And so, one of the things is how do we change that? How do we address the wealth gap?”

Greater community banking access

One way of addressing the wealth gap is providing greater banking and program access to minority and historically underserved populations.

This year Old National, in response to the growth of the Spanish-speaking population and clients within the Midwest footprint, expanded it online and mobile banking to offer availability in Spanish.

“In Chicagoland alone, one out of every three individuals is Latino,” Sanchez said. “It's the second-largest Latino market in the United States. In Milwaukee, it’s nearly 20% of the population. The Latino community grew 8% alone in the last 10 years. In Indianapolis the Latino population has quadrupled since the 1990s, and in Minneapolis it has increased 38% since 2010. This is a great way to become a more inclusive financial institution while providing services to the underserved.”
