Culture and Engagement: The Cornerstones of Organizational Success
By Kathy Schoettlin, Chief Communications, Culture & Social Responsibility Officer, EVP
At Old National, we often say that our culture isn’t just what we do—it’s who we are. It’s the heartbeat of our organization, the thread that connects our team members, clients, and communities. It’s the reason we’ve been able to thrive for more than 190 years.
In today’s rapidly evolving business landscape, culture and engagement are no longer “nice to have”—they are strategic imperatives. Organizations that prioritize these elements are better equipped to navigate change, foster innovation, and build lasting relationships. At Old National, we’ve seen firsthand how a strong, inclusive culture and deeply engaged team members can drive performance, strengthen communities, and create a workplace where people feel valued and inspired.
The Power of Purpose
Our purpose is clear: to invest our time, heart, and expertise so that our clients and communities thrive. This purpose is embedded in everything we do—from our client interactions to our community partnerships to our team member development programs. It’s reflected in our six core values: Integrity, Inclusion, Excellence, Optimism, Agility, and Collaboration.
These values aren’t just words on a wall. They guide our decisions, shape our behaviors, and define our culture. They remind us that success isn’t measured solely by financial performance, but by the impact we make in people’s lives.
Engagement Starts with Listening
One of the most powerful tools we have is our ability to listen. Through our annual Engagement Survey, Inclusive Conversations, and regular town halls, we create space for honest dialogue and continuous improvement.
We believe that when team members feel heard, they feel empowered—and empowered, engaged people do extraordinary things.
Our culture shaping initiatives, including the “Leading Better Together” development course and monthly culture topics, have helped us build a shared language around inclusion, energy, and presence. These efforts have not only strengthened our leadership pipeline but also deepened our collective commitment to living our values.
Culture in Action
Our annual Community Action Report highlights how culture and engagement are woven into our governance, client service, team member development, and sustainability efforts. Whether it’s through volunteerism, financial education, or our team member-led Impact Networks, we strive to create an environment where every team member can contribute meaningfully, grow professionally and feel like they belong.
We’ve trained more than 700 people leaders to deliver ONe Culture sessions, certified internal trainers, and launched monthly culture connects to keep our values front and center. These programs aren’t just about compliance—they’re about connection. They help us build trust, foster belonging, and ensure that every team member understands their role in shaping our culture.
Why It Matters
Culture and engagement aren’t just internal metrics—they’re business drivers. Engaged team members are more productive, more innovative, and more likely to stay. A strong culture attracts top talent, strengthens client relationships, and enhances reputation.
At Old National, we’ve seen how our culture fuels our success. It’s helped us navigate mergers, expand our footprint, and deepen our impact. It’s why in 2025 we were once again named one of the 50 most community-minded companies in the U.S. by The Civic 50. It’s why we continue to invest in our people, our communities, and our shared future.
Tips for Leaders
For business owners and organization leaders looking to strengthen their culture and engagement, here are a few tips:
- Start with Purpose: Define your mission and values clearly—and live them consistently. Purpose-driven organizations inspire loyalty and drive impact.
- Listen Actively: Create channels for feedback and act on what you hear. Engagement grows when people feel their voices matter.
- Invest in Development: Provide opportunities for growth at every level. Leadership development, mentorship, and training programs are powerful engagement tools.
- Celebrate Often: Recognition fuels motivation. Celebrate achievements, milestones, and everyday contributions.
- Lead Inclusively: Foster a culture of belonging where every team member feels seen, heard, and valued. Inclusion isn’t just a value—it’s a strategy.
Looking Ahead
As we look to the future, our commitment to culture and engagement remains unwavering. We know that our success depends on the strength of our people and the depth of our relationships. By continuing to invest in both, we will build a more resilient, inclusive, and impactful organization—one that thrives together.
Because at Old National, we believe we’re truly Better Together.
