Old National Bank and The Civic 50: Redefining the future of volunteering and community investment

Building up the communities we work and live in, whether through grants, creating new lending options for underrepresented communities, or volunteering, has always been Old National’s way of putting our values in action. We thrive when our communities thrive.

Last year this was demonstrated by:

  • More than 67,000 collective volunteer hours logged by Old National team members
  • $12.6 million in total grants and sponsorships to community organizations, benefiting more than 2,500 non-profits
  • An additional $3.68 million in community grants to 229 organizations through the Old National Bank Foundation

This June, Old National was named to The Civic 50 for the second consecutive year. Presented by the Points of Light Foundation, and founded by former President George H.W. Bush, The Civic 50 annually names the 50 most community-minded companies in the nation.

The Civic 50

The Civic 50 honorees are companies with annual U.S. revenues of at least $1 billion, selected based on four dimensions of their corporate citizenship and social impact programs:

  • Investment of resources and volunteerism
  • Integration across business functions
  • Institutionalization through policies and systems
  • Impact measurement

Fellow honorees of The Civic 50 include Adobe, Capital One, Charles Schwab, Delta Airlines, General Motors, John Deere, Pacific Life, United Health Group, and UPS.

How does Old National strive to positively impact communities?

Building Sustainable Communities

For Old National, playing a role in building sustainable communities is both a goal and a responsibility. We seek and create lending, investment, and service opportunities that support and empower underserved populations and economically disadvantaged communities.

We also firmly believe that financial education and empowerment is the key to wealth creation and a better future for all individuals and communities. Our low cost ($4.99 for a lifetime license) Real-Life Finance program and its online platform offers approximately 50 individual lessons on personal financial topics impacting individuals, and is complimented by our monthly Real-Life Finance Podcast. In 2024, Old National’s 226 registered financial instructors hosted 850 in-person workshops with more than 30,000 participants, serving organizations of all types, and empowering individuals to become successful money managers, budgeters, first-time homeowners, and, in some cases, business owners.

“The value of financial literacy to our students cannot be overstated,” says Michael D. Bedel, CPA, CGMA, Chief Financial Officer, Marian University. “Old National’s Real-Life Finance program is important to our university vision of preparing transformative leaders for service to the world; leaders who are trustworthy, healthy, inquisitive, and skilled.”

Better Together Days

In 2022, Old National introduced “Better Together Days” – an annual, two-day volunteer event where team members are empowered to spend up to four hours volunteering in their communities. In 2024, more than 2,400 Old National team members logged 7,600 total hours in support of roughly 200 organizations.

Not only did we help strengthen the local communities we serve, but Old National team members proved that we truly are “Better Together” when we take time to roll up our sleeves and say “thank you” to our communities.

Community Growth Plan

In February 2022, Old National announced a five-year, $8.3 billion Community Growth Plan focused on expanding our longstanding commitment to support historically underserved and economically disadvantaged individuals, families, and communities. The plan was developed in collaboration with the National Community Reinvestment Coalition and its members.

In 2024, Old National added $1.2 billion in commitments in the state of Tennessee in conjunction with our now-completed partnership with Nashville-based CapStar Bank. Additionally, as part of our recently-closed Bremer Bank partnership, we announced an additional $1.6 billion in Community Growth plan commitments within the Upper Midwest. These additions increase Old National’s overall Community Growth Plan commitment to $11.1 billion.

A Bold New Goal

Volunteer numbers declined nationwide during COVID-19 and have yet to return to pre-pandemic levels. With this reality in mind, Old National is particularly proud to support the Points of Light Foundation’s newly-announced goal of doubling American volunteerism by 2035.

“Companies like Old National are leading the way in showing how social impact benefits their employee’s well-being, strengthens the communities where they do business, and brings value and meaning to their work,” said Points of Light President and CEO Jennifer Sirangelo.

As the late President George H.W. Bush, founder of the Points of Light Foundation, stated: “We can find meaning and reward by serving some higher purpose than ourselves, a shining purpose, the illumination of a thousand points of light. We all have something to give.”
